WANG QUADRUPLE GOLDEN AS MCGILL MEN CLAIM SECOND STRAIGHT QUEBEC CUP MEET
MONTREAL -- Samuel Wang of Sherbrooke, Que., won four gold medals to earn swimmer-of-the-meet honours as the McGill Redmen captured their second consecutive RSEQ Quebec Cup meet, held Saturday at Memorial Pool on the campus of McGill University.
The Redmen reached the podium nine times, including four gold, four silver and one bronze medal to win in spectacular fashion, by one point, on the last race of the meet. McGill finished first of five teams with 135.5 points, followed by the Montreal Carabins (134.5), Laval (78), Sherbrooke (30) and UQTR (0).
On the women's side, Jessica Warrack, a chemical engineering senior from Calgary, won gold and bronze, leading McGill to a second-place finish. A powerhouse Montreal squad racked up 195.5 points to claim the meet title, followed by McGill (86), Laval (67.5), UQTR (20) and Sherbrooke (11).
Wang, a 21-year-old biochemistry sophomore, touched the wall first in both the 50-metre freestyle (23.23 seconds) and 100 butterfly (55.38). The 5-foot-10, 153-pound sprinter also swam the anchor leg on both winning relays, the 4x100 medley and the 4x100 freestyle.
The medley relay finished in 3:46.14 and included newcomer Bradley Crocker, a transfer from Calgary, junior Zachary Pilling, from Kirkland, Que., Wang and freshman Marius Collin, a native of France. The free relay was clocked in 3:25.20 and featured sophomore William Simpson of Kingston, Ont., on the leadoff leg, followed by Wang, junior Kade Wist of Calgary, and Crocker, who swam the anchor leg.
It wasn't an easy victory for the Redmen. A disqualification by the men's B foursome in the 4x100 medley relay put the Redmen behind the proverbial eight-ball. But in an ending that highlight reels are made of, gold and bronze swims by the A and B squads in the 4x100 free -- the last race of the meet -- garnered the points needed to seize the day.
"We were down by four points going into the last relay and won it and the B relay (Marius Collin, Gabriel Fortin, Jason Galet, William Dixon) came third, said head coach Peter Carpenter."We outscored Montreal by five points in that event and went on to win the meet by one point."
Yet as impressive as Wang was, Carpenter gave accolades to the whole men's team, which pulled together when they really needed to.
"From the beginning of the year the guys have been talking about Cup 2," said Carpenter. "It was the meet they wanted to win."
Traditionally the team as had trouble getting up for home meets, which is usually in the middle of mid-term exams, explained Carpenter. But renewed focus and better attendance at practice during this busy part of the academic year made the difference.
Other individual medal winners include the aforementioned Simpson (silvers in both the 200 free and 200 back) and Wist (silver, 100 fly), along with David Brenken (silver, 1500 free), a sophomore from Toronto.
On the women's side, Warrack took the 400 IM in 4:52.66 and was third in 100 breast (1:14.00). Other McGill medals went to freshman Bailey Mothe (bronze, 400 IM) of White Rock, B.C., and Gabrielle Doueihy (bronze, 800 free), a freshman from Lebanon.
The female athlete of the meet was UdeM sprinter Sandrine Mainville, who also struck gold four times, winning the 50 free, 50 breast, 4x100 free and 4x100 MR.
Next on the schedule are the third and fourth Quebec Cup meets, slated for Nov. 25-25 at the CEPSUM pool on the campus of Universite de Montreal.
